Howard Vaugh

Howard Vaughn
Director of Basketball Operations

Coach Howard Vaughn, the Director of Basketball Operations for Akron’s Finest, is a graduate of Buchtel High School where he lettered in basketball for three years and baseball for four.

After obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Administration from Texas Southern University, he served on the City of Akron Police Department for over 24 years.

Howard has also served the community coaching basketball. He currently coaches 8th grade boys at St. Anthony of Padua-Akron, where he has coached 4th, 5th and 6th grade boys over the past four years. Previously he coached basketball for Akron Buchtel CLC for eight years, and nine years as Head Baseball Coach. Besides coaching AAU for Akron’s Finest, Howard was also Head Basketball Coach for MKU Athletics for two years and one year at Ohio Phenom Academy in Akron.

Coach Corey Jacobs

Corey Jacobs
Director of Training

Coach Corey Jacobs is a former Ohio high school basketball player at Medina Christian Academy. His honors include All Medina 1st Team and a three-year Letterman winner. Following high school, Corey coached youth basketball.

After starting a family, he volunteered as a youth travel basketball coach where he was an assistant basketball coach for MKU Athletics and Ohio Phenom Academy in Akron.

"I love basketball. I have two sons and they are involved in multiple sports. Sports has always been important to me because of the tools it gives you to succeed in life and for me to see that process is very gratifying!".

Coach Diaire Pride

Diaire Pride

Coach Diaire Pride is Akron’s Finest AAU Basketball Assistant Coach for 7th grade. He has coached AAU and youth basketball for all different age levels for many years and focuses on the skills and ball handling.

Diaire was a variety player for three years at Akron East and Akron Central Hower High School, where he graduated from in 2004. He was a two-time all city player and 2002 District Champion and regional semi-finals runner up for Akron East.

Coach John Whorton

John Whorton

Coach John Whorton is the Head Basketball coach for Akron's Finest 7th grade team. He is a graduate of Columbus Whetstone High School where he lettered in basketball all four years and is a member of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. While there he was All City his junior and senior year, and All District his senior year while winning district Player of the Year. John was also was 2nd team all state, leading his team to the regional finals.

While at Kent State University, John led the team to its first NCAA berth. He was all conference his last two years, and MVP of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. After finishing his four years at Kent State, he played nine years of professional basketball throughout Europe, South America, and Australasia, winning numerous MVP and all league honors.

John has coached AAU basketball for the last four years with Hoop Guru and most recently Ohio Phenom Academy of Akron. Wanting to make sure that his son was learning the game of basketball the right way is very important to him and is what drives him. He is very passionate about making sure that players under his tutelage are not only learning how to be good basketball players, but more importantly, great young men.
